That intense throbbing pain usually at one side of your head and often accompanied by nausea and/or vomiting completely knocks many people of their feet. The lucky ones may get some warning a few days before such as cravings for certain foods like sweets and chocolate or general lethargy. In such cases if you can recognise these warning signs it may be possible to eliminate the cause or start treatment before the onset. Other people will have what is known as an "aura" for a short time before the migraine kicks in. The most common symptoms of the "aura" are flashing lights in front of your eyes or zig zag lines disrupting your vision. More disturbing symptoms which can occur are numbness down the side which is effected my the migraine or speech difficulties i.e. slurring etc.

There are many triggers which can bring on an attack. In this day and age probably the most common cause is stress in the work place, the feeling of being constantly placed under pressure can cause great anxiety thus fuelling the migraine.

Certain foods may also be to blame such as cheese, chocolate, alcohol - red wine in particular, and processed or canned foods which often contain monosodium glutamate. On the other hand lack of food can also act as a trigger.

Strong smells such as perfume, paint, stale smoke or being in a stuffy atmosphere often contribute.

To be truthful it takes more than one of these factors to trigger an attack and the combination is unique to each individual.

Before you can think about how to tackle the symptoms, prevent or reduce the severity of attacks it is important that you work out what the combination of factors is that may bring on the headache. Try keeping a diary of foods consumed, dates when you felt under increased stress, and so on to gradually build a picture or pattern of events leading up to attacks.

For women (who incidentally are more likely to suffer from migraines than men) it is important to keep track of your monthly cycles as hormonal changes in the body before and during your monthly period are often the trigger. The contraceptive pill and hormone replacement therapy can also sometimes increase the occurrence of migraine.

So, you have established the cause what do you do now?

There are a great many "over the counter" drugs designed to relieve the symptoms, both pain and nausea, however in sever attacks these may not be enough. Prescription drugs from a doctor may be more effective and can usually be tailored more to suit individuals.

However, lots of sufferers these days would rather not take drugs but rather try other methods usually aimed more at prevention rather than cure.

There are a few things you can try. Here are some examples:-

1. Try different methods of relaxation for instance; yoga or meditation, going along to one of these classes may turn out to be fun! Alternatively you can teach yourself these techniques using books or DVDs

2. Ensure you get enough sleep most people need between 7 and 9 hours per night.

3. Take some form of exercise for example walking or swimming - nothing too excessive because too much exertion can bring on a migraine!

4. Set aside at least one hour a day just to do something you enjoy which will relax you such as reading a book, watch your favourite television show, do some gardening - fresh air can work wonders after a day at the office!!

5. Eliminate foods from your diet completely which you have established act as triggers for the headaches. Have some fun trying out recipes using alternatives.

6. A gentle massage can be very effective and other more alternative treatments appear to help in some cases such as acupuncture.

7. If you have an attack try lying in a darkened room and place an ice pack at the back of your neck - for others a hot water bottle may be more effective.

8. Apply gentle pressure to the painful areas of your head and if possible sleep.

9. There are herbal medicines that can be taken as preventative measures such as feverfew and butterbur or supplements containing magnesium and vitamin B2. If you suspect or are pregnant or breast feeding do not use any of these items without professional advice.

10. The most important thing to remember when trying to prevent or reduce migraine attacks is to eliminate one or more of the contributory factors - the triggers.

Ive had a migraine for a week, whats the best migraine relief?

  • good_morning_sunshine asked on Wed, 03 Oct, 2007
I have had surgery on my jaw to correct TMJ, so my jaw is supposed to be in good shape but the left side has been bothering me quite a bit recently, and im goin to the dr next week about it. I also have neck pain along with my migraines and Im hoping its all connected to my jaw....but i need some relief until i go to the dr. I have tried: excedrin migraine, vicks chest rub on my forehead, cool towel, quiet dark room, sleeping etc. But i just wake up with a migraine. Ive had one for about a week now. Well i was just at my general dr last week and she checked my sinuses and all was fine. Also all my blood work was perfect, so Im assuming it is all connected to my jaw. If I go gt help now, won't they just give be rx meds and send me on my way?
  • G.V. replied on Wed, 03 Oct, 2007
Prescription drugs like Imitrex or Maxalt.

If you have repeatedly taken excedrin migraine, you may be causing something called rebound headaches. Try a warm bath and put warm moist heat on the muscles of the cheeks by the ears, under the jaw and behind the neck and base of the skull. If it is related to these muscles, the warm heat will force the muscles to relax and help. Plus, when you are in pain, you tend to tense those muscles and make a bad migraine worse. warm moist heat: one of those heating pads you throw in the microwave with the azuki beans or rice in them will emit that kindof heat; or just use a heating pad; or one of those rubber water containers you can put really warm water in. Consider going to urgent care or the ER if you have insurance. Your copay might be 100 bucks (or more) but it might be worth it, right? They'll give you a shot and you'll be allright. Oh and she's right about the orgasm. Good luck, I feel for you.

The drugs have made liver fire excessive and it made the Gall Bladder Meridian excessive; your pain is along its' pathway. There is no medicine for H/A OR MIGRAINE. Not only these but for almost all painful diseases. Hence they become chronic. Acidity, WORRY, excessive wind, cold , heat, sour food and sinusitis, constipation, intestinal inflammation; drugs, Blockage in the flow of Vital Energy are their causes. None of them can be treated with medicine. Our 100% success in treating migraine &H/A confirms it. Pain killers don't treat the pain but we loose the sense of pain for some time; in that duration our body itself treats sometime and credit goes to meds. Acupuncture is the best treatment. I can treat it with naturopathy and YOG, but how can you manage pl see. Avoid drugs & late sleeping if possible; worry, spicy foods, sour fruits, stale bakery foods and alcohole. Sweet foods, COCOANUT WATER,sweet fruits, milk, rice, SPROUTS, SALADS and good sleep will help you. But you try one herbal remedy- two drops of drumstick leaves' juice in opposite nostril if one side pains and both nostrils if full H/A will give you rescue. Betel leaf helps but it is very strong. If it is acute pl search a painful point 3-6 mm behind your thumb nail and press it, H/A will disappear within 30 seconds. Drink lots of water and get some fresh air.
  • ladydye_5 replied on Thu, 04 Oct, 2007
if you wake up with it every morning there could be a number of things. you might "grind "your teeth, and a simple mouthpiece would help. you could also be allergic to something in your bedroom, dust mites, pillows, sheets, plants, a pet that sleeps in your room, mold etc. try and antihistamine and an air purifier. speak to your dr about migraine abortive medications (imitrex zomig maxalt etc.) they work much better than anything over the counter. if you are diagnosed with true migraines and suffer from them chronically there are also preventatives you can take on a routine basis to help keep them at bay (i have been on these for 9 years).

i wouldnt wait for a week id be calling the dr now. thats not good you need medical treatment
  • mlgable replied on Wed, 03 Oct, 2007
Go to urgent care now and get this checked out. It could be a sinus infection and not a migraine. If it is a migraine they can give you medicine specifically for migraines to get rid of it. No matter what you need to go to urgent care as a week is to long to let a headache of any kind go unchecked and untreated. Get off the computer and go get it checked out tonight.

Not to be creepy, but try to have an orgasm. It helps I swear.
